about

"Stay a While" is an album of folky poppy tunes by Dave Richardson (www.myspace.com/daverichardson). Dave has been participating in the RPM Challenge, which involves writing and recording an entire album in the month of February. This time around, Dave decided to take some extra time to extensively re-work his final product and release it as an album. This is that album.

Track Name: Walnuts
Walnuts saved us from the drought
We pressed them with our hands
Send a bag up to us,
We are seated in the stands

Indigo to vertigo
I go, I gone, I went
When I fell from the clock tower
It was no accident

April may called August June
and asked to know the time
August June told April May to
Check her watch next time

Sitting on a pile of rocks
The wind comes, knocks you down
People pass and wonder why you
Wear that wedding gown

Once upon a time there was
a girl made from straw
Her eyes were ever open wide
Folks wondered what she saw

She would hang around most days
at Lincoln Varney’s farm
He says she keeps the crows at bay
She means no one no harm

Walnuts saved us from the drought
We pressed them with our hands
Send a bag up to us,
We are seated in the stands
Track Name: Route 9
Off route 9 in a little roadside bar
Off route 9 in a little roadside bar
I pulled over just to look at the moon and the stars

Sat down on a barstool, ordered myself a beer
Sat down on a barstool, ordered myself a beer
Plain to see why I’m the only person here

Bartender takes a pull off a dusty bottle of Jack
Bartender takes a pull off a dusty bottle of Jack
And then disappears into a little room out back

I think of cleaning out whatever he’s got in the till
I think of cleaning out whatever he’s got in the till
Then I figure all he’s got inside’s my five dollar bill

Jukebox in the corner playing the same sad tune
Jukebox in the corner playing the same sad tune
“I’ve got these little things, she’s got you”

Leave a dollar on the bar, step back out into the night
Leave a dollar on the bar, step back out into the night
Start the car and flick on the headlights
Track Name: Play and Win?
Shake it off, drive drivin’ all over town
Ooh, ooh, baby can you tell me can I follow you down?
I take some time to try and figure out what shape I’m in
Ooh, ooh, baby can you tell me how to play and win?

You got a lotta nerve actin’ like you know the deal
Here’s the thing friend, the verdict’s read but I’ll appeal
You think you know cuz of something that you heard
Here’s the thing friend, you’re nothing but a dirty bird

I’ll see you Sunday and you best be in a better mood
Cuz I don’t need any of your crabby attitude
We’ll toss the Frisbee around, sipping Milwaukee’s Best
Cuz I don’t need any stressin’ on my day of rest

If you could change one thing about me, what would it be?
Take your time, when you think of it get back to me
You should slow things down, that’s what I wish for you
Take your time, relax, cuz once it’s done you’re through
Track Name: Shape Up or Ship Out
Well I ain’t got time to wonder
Don’t have to anyways
Just one look around these parts
And it’s clear as the nose on my face

You think you got ‘em eating
Out of the palm of your hand
But one day these people gonna rise up
And then you’ll know where you stand

You gotta shape up or ship out
Come on, what’ll it be?

You spoke a pretty sermon
Like you were the next coming of the Lord
And you asked for contributions
More than most folks can afford

And that’s all fine and good, friend
But you gotta follow through
Give these people what they need or it’ll
Be the end of you

You gotta shape up or ship out
Come on, what’ll it be?

Most of the people ‘round here
Have had it tough for a while
Right now it’s looking like they gave an inch
And you plan on taking a mile

So start making some changes
Stop talking and dig in
Everybody’s in their seats
Waiting for the show to begin

You gotta shape up or ship out
Come on, what’ll it be?
Track Name: Never Gonna Fall In Love Again
Girl, I’ll never understand
How you could up and leave your man
Was it all pretend?

But I know this much is true
Now that I am over you
I ain’t never gonna fall in love again

All those nights we lay in bed
With my arms ‘round you
Tell me baby, what did it all amount to?

Drank my sorrows by the glass
Mixed with whiskey and I asked
Will this pain ever end?

And when the night gave way to dawn
I could see where I’d gone wrong
And I ain’t never gonna fall in love again

With each day that passed
I felt more alone
My once beating heart
Had turned to stone

I lost my lover, lost my soul
Lord, I nearly lost control
And what’s worse, I lost my best friend

I gave my time, gave my trust
I’m left with a handful of dust
And I ain’t never gonna fall in love again

No, I ain’t never gonna fall in love again
Track Name: snowbeard
I got snow clinging to my beard
It’s so cold outside, can I come in here?
I got snow clinging to my beard

There’s a fire burning in this little bed
I’m s’posed to leave but can I stay instead?
A fire burning in this little bed

The temperature has dropped to near zero
Please don’t tell me that I’ve gotta go
The temperature has dropped to near zero

And when the storm finally leaves town
What do you think about me sticking around
When the storm finally leaves town
Track Name: Tornado
That tornado’s gonna be the death of me
That tornado’s gonna be the death of me
Well I lived through sleet and rain
Suffered through a hurricane
But that tornado’s gonna be the death of me

They said evacuate but I will not go
They said evacuate but I will not go
I’ve been running all my days
Now it’s time to change my ways
They said evacuate but I will not go

The wind’s a howlin’, the sky’s turning black
That wind’s a howlin’, the sky’s turning black
That twister’s on its way, sure as night turns into day
The wind’s a howlin’, the sky’s turning black

Well, I ‘spect this is the last you’ll hear from me
Yes, I ‘spect this is the last you’ll hear from me
I see that funnel coming near but I have nothing to fear
I ‘spect this is the last you’ll hear from me

Cuz that tornado’s gonna be the death of me
Yes that tornado’s gonna be the death of me
I’ve lived through sleet and rain
Suffered through a hurricane
But that tornado’s gonna be the death of me

Yes I’ve lived through sleet and rain
Suffered through a hurricane
But that tornado’s gonna be the death of me!
Track Name: Foot to Pavement
I could stop and try to figure
out where you are at this very moment

but I gotta keep moving step by step
foot to pavement

I have always been a big proponent
of forward motion

Still, I gotta keep myself from looking
In the wrong direction

I’ve shaken you off like water that clung to a plastic tarp that was cov’rin’ a cord of wood kindling
You’re gone
I mostly stayed dry

I had entertained the thought of
Your voice in my ear

Funny just how used you can get
to something that’s not there

Your face has faded some
It’s not so clear in my memory

Things are lonelier without these thoughts
keeping me company

I’ve put you aside like a book full of beautiful prose that I know that I can’t understand
I’ve moved on
I won’t pick you up again

I could stop and try to figure
out where you are at this very moment

but I gotta keep moving step by step
foot to pavement
Track Name: Samesame
It was a cakewalk, it was easy as pie
Like taking candy from a baby
Well you wanna know why I’m using
All these analogies?
It’s a defensive strategy

I’m on a roll now, but don’t be surprised
In an hour when I’m standing here
With bloodshot eyes
And I’m lost in space
Got that look on my face

Samesame ordering Chinese food
Lamelame I’m in a bad bad mood
Gamegame play the game don’t be rude
Samesame, you better send in that wrecking crew

I cruise around town to see all the sights
I go from Government Center
Up to Orient Heights
My car’s a Honda Fit
And I’m in love with it

Out in the backyard I got a hammock set up
I’m throwing pebbles at your window
Trying to wake you up
Already used that line
In another song of mine

Samesame ordering Chinese food
Shameshame humiliating you
Tametame quoting The Pixies too
Samesame, now sing it with attitude

It was a cakewalk, it was easy as pie
Like taking candy from a baby
Well you wanna know why I’m using
All these analogies?
It’s a defensive strategy!
Track Name: I Know You, Narwhal
I know you, Narwhal
You’re the unicorn whale
I wish I could hop a boat
And set sail
To come and see you
And stay a while
We could ride a wave or two
Swim in style

But alas, I’m landlocked
In this mountain town
It sure is pretty
Not trying to put it down
But I can’t visit the beach
When the weather’s fair
And I can’t smell the
Salt in the air

Ooo, you narwhal
You’ve got it made
In those ice cold waters
You can chill all day
Snacking on shrimp or
Maybe cod
Your tusk protruding
Like a lightening rod

I know that someday
I’ll go back home
Where the shores are rocky
And the ocean foam
Tickles my bare feet
As I walk along
That blessed coastline
Where I belong
